Africa has 54 recognized countries — from the Sahara to the Cape. How many flags can you identify?
54 Country FlagsRed, yellow, and green dominate African flags and are known as the Pan-African colors. Ethiopia — one of only two African nations never colonized — first used this combination in 1897. After waves of independence in the 1950s and 60s, newly sovereign states adopted these colors to symbolize African unity, natural wealth, and the blood shed for freedom. Today, over 20 African flags feature some combination of these three colors.
Many African flags carry symbols with deep cultural roots. Ghana's black star represents African freedom and was inspired by Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line. Mozambique's flag uniquely features an AK-47 crossed with a hoe, representing defense and agriculture. Eswatini (Swaziland) displays a traditional Nguni shield and spears. Kenya's Maasai shield is one of the most distinctive emblems on any national flag worldwide.
Even geography experts struggle with some African flags. Mali and Guinea have identical color stripes (green-yellow-red vs red-yellow-green) — only the order differs. Chad and Romania share nearly identical blue-yellow-red vertical stripes, confusing quiz-takers worldwide. Ivory Coast's orange-white-green is often mixed up with Ireland's green-white-orange. If you can tell these apart, you are in the top 5% of flag quiz players.
Africa has 54 internationally recognized countries, making it the continent with the second-highest number of nations after Asia. This includes island nations like Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Cape Verde, and Sao Tome and Principe.
These are the Pan-African colors, first used by Ethiopia — one of only two African countries never colonized. When nations gained independence in the 1950s-60s, many adopted these colors to symbolize African unity. Red represents blood shed for freedom, yellow stands for mineral wealth and sunshine, and green represents the land and hope.
Nepal is famous globally for its non-rectangular flag, but within Africa, Mozambique's flag is arguably the most unique — it is the only national flag in the world that features a modern firearm (an AK-47). South Africa's flag with its Y-shape (pall) design using six colors is also highly distinctive and was designed in 1994 for the post-apartheid era.
